What is a fiber optic breakout box?

In its simplest definition, a fiber breakout box connects various fiber optic cables for a wide range of applications. When it comes to using a hybrid fiber cable, the box is what you need to convert it to a conventional fiber cable.

An SMPTE 311m hybrid fiber cable, for example, can be converted into single mode ST or LC cable. Depending on the breakout box, the hybrid cable can be converted into an opticalCON DUO cable.

Breakout boxes are available in different configurations—wall mount and rack mount, and for either indoor or outdoor use. Different fiber breakout boxes come with a different number of connections.

The Camplex 1-Channel Neutrik OpticalCON to Duplex ST Fiber Breakout Box, for example, will convert a Neutrik opticalCON cable to standard Duplex ST fiber connectors. The 5-Channel Camplex Eliminator Breakout Box, on the other hand, will convert SMPTE 311M hybrid fiber connectors to standard Duplex ST fiber connectors.

With a fiber breakout box, distances of fiber connection are increased without increasing the cost.

Sample Application of Fiber Breakout Boxes

Basically, a fiber breakout box is used to break out a hybrid camera connector to two ST female connectors. In an area or production environment where hybrid fiber interconnects are not available, the box allows an HD camera to connect to a camera control unit (CCU) over existing fiber tie-lines. This is made possible by the discrete, industry-standard optical and electrical components.

The breakout box also serves as a rack or mount in places where such devices are not available.

How to Choose a Fiber Optic Breakout Box?

When choosing a fiber breakout box, certain considerations have to be made.

Profile

Are you looking for a breakout box that you can use indoors or outdoors? If it’s the latter, make sure the box is built to withstand the elements and other factors it may be subjected to.

A box that is made of steel and is ruggedized is an ideal choice. Even when used in sports arenas or remote production environments, it will survive and work as intended.

Breakout boxes are also available for male or female SMPTE hybrid cables.

Channels

As previously mentioned, a fiber breakout box is available with 1 to 6 channels. What you choose will depend on the fiber cable you use. Some boxes are designed for a specific type of cable.
