What is an LED Projector?

Do not mistake an LED projector for any regular projector. These three are different from each other. Standing for Light-emitting diode, LED projectors use an array of LED lights to produce light that projects an image. This is far from traditional projectors too which operates using a gas-filled bulb at high temperatures.

Consequently, projectors that use LED are far cooler than its counterparts. It is also energy efficient as it requires less power to function. Furthermore, it has color display that is more accurate with longer lasting bulbs, making this an economical choice.

How Do LEDs Function?

The light-emitting diodes undergo electroluminescence, which is a process wherein light is produced. Energy transferred through the semiconducting material excites electrons into releasing photons which, in turn, produces light. Unlike the use of electric bulbs, this process does not produce a lot of heat. Hence, this is highly sufficient for long use.

Regarding electroluminescence, white light is produced from a mixture of primary and secondary colors. This, in turn, is reflected off a series of mirrors like in a DLP chip or a liquid crystal-like in an LCD projector. To put this simply, an LED projector functions in the same way as an LCD or DLP projector with bulbs being the only difference.

Why are LED Projectors a Good Option?

As mentioned, LEDs do not use a lot of energy and so these are much cooler than traditional bulbs. However, that is not the only advantage. Because of the lack of need for a complex airflow system, projectors with LED bulbs are virtually noiseless. So you are ensured of a better viewing experience free from any annoying mechanical noise.

Moreover, because of its color combination of green, red, and blue, LEDs produce the true representation of white than most bulbs could generate. And since LED bulbs last longer, you may not need any replacement at all.

On an average, a 20,000-hour bulb can last up to 6 years and 10 months, even if it is running for 8 hours a day every week. And if you are going to use it much less than that, you are guaranteed that it will last up to 27 years. So you are surely going to save a lot from maintenance and repairs.

Lastly, an LED projector is more compact than its bulkier counterparts making this easily portable and lighter.

What to Look for When Buying LED Projectors

Whether for a classroom, home theatre, or meeting room, image projection can make a huge impression on any audience. Buying projectors should not be a hassle. All you need to do is to look for the following:

Color Brightness and White Brightness

Test brightness whenever buying a projector. The light output of the device is measured through a lumens rating. If you see only one brightness spec indicated for a particular model, usually this would be for the white brightness.  

Contrast Ratio

Know the contrast ratio of a given device. This is basically the difference between the light and dark on a particular image display. Expressed numerically, it takes the whitest white and the darkest black with comparison to the luminosity of projection.

Resolution

Figure the resolution capacity of a projector to gauge the image quality. As the resolution goes higher, so is the number of pixels used to generate a projected image.
