An XLR connector is primarily found on professional audio and video equipment as well as stage lighting. It is commonly associated with lighting control, low voltage power supplies, balanced audio interconnection, and other applications.

XLR connectors are circular in design with pins that range between 3 and 7. A number of manufacturers produce XLR connectors and follow the international standard for dimensions, IEC 61076-2-103.

Current XLR receptacle and connector design

There are male and female versions of XLR cable connectors and chassis mounting designs. Pin 1 (the earth pin) of the female XLR connector is designed to connect first before other pins make contact when a male XLR connector is inserted.

This ensures that, when an XLR connector is inserted or removed in live equipment, extra signals are not picked up, which is a common occurrence with RCA connectors.

It is possible for different XLR connectors from different manufacturers to be paired up. The Switchcraft six-pin model is an exception because it uses a non-standard pin arrangement.

Three-pin XLR (XLR3) connectors are the industry standard for balanced audio signals and primarily used on professional microphones.

Pin 1 - Chassis ground
Pin 2 - Positive polarity terminal
Pin 3 - Negative polarity terminal

For balanced audio circuits, Pin 1 is also known as "hot" and Pin 2 is "cold".

Four-pin XLR (XLR4) connectors are standard for intercom headsets, DC power connections for professional film and video cameras, some pyrotechnic equipment, AMX analog lighting control, and desk microphones with LEDs.

Five-pin XLR (XLR5) connectors are the standard for DMX512, a digital communication network commonly used to control digital stage lighting and effects. The connector is also used for stereo intercom headset and DC power in audio equipment.

Six-pin XLR (XLR6) connectors are used for stage lighting control applications, dual channel intercom systems, and professional stereo headset with a balanced microphone.

Seven-pin XLR (XLR6) connectors carry heater, HT, signal, and polarization voltage from some valve condenser microphones to the power supply.

XLR cable connectors and the Balanced Cables

Balanced audio cables have negative, positive, and ground wires that serve as conductors. As previously mentioned, Pin 1 is always the ground signal.

Because of their ability to deliver balanced microphone and line-level signals, XLR cables guarantee that the final audio signal has little unwanted noise from electrical interference coming from the outside or other electronic devices nearby. Even over long-distance transmission, the original audio signal is preserved with balanced XLR cable connectors and cables.

A balanced XLR cable is suitable for both recording studio and live sound applications. It is also used to connect most microphones, especially those that require a power source because XLR cables can deliver phantom power from the mixing boards (source) to the microphone (destination).

Instead of a battery, phantom power serves as an alternative power source for condenser microphones and similar microphones.
